I just ran across this case study in the February 2008 issue of the New Oxford Review Vol. LXXV, Number 2. What was so intriguing about it was not only the valiant attempt to document an alleged "clear cut case of demonic possession", but more importantly to me at least was the scientific qualifications of the researcher. Is any place safe? I get asked this question both when I’m speaking at conferences and about once a week in my email. The answer, in my opinion is no. The planet is wired together and the military has equipment that can locate a mosquito in the middle of a haystack. There’s no place on this planet that a person can run to that won’t be affected by what is coming on the earth.

If you were ever confronted by a rattlesnake on a plane (as in that horrible movie) or anywhere else for that matter, what would you do?  Would you attempt to talk your way out of this potentially deadly experience? Would you put your arms around the snake and sing cumbaya to the sound of the bloodcurdling rattling noise?

On the past Veteran’s Day, I was reflecting on my own lack of military service. I was in Bill Clinton’s brigade. I resisted the draft in the Vietnam War. When I graduated in Human Evolution in 1969, I could not go as I wished to grad school. I did alternate service in the inner city of Cleveland teaching Fifth grade. I would have been safer in Vietnam with all the riots and burnings.

Since the abortion rights movement started gaining ground nearly 40 years ago, abortion has been postured as an issue of women's rights and as a way of advancing the freedoms of women. However, when Roe v. Wade legalized abortion, millions of women began having to deal with the painful psychological, physical and spiritual realities of the issue.

I submit that a good many in America are, like Rome of old, carelessly frittering away their God-given liberties, foolishly clamoring for nothing more than government handouts and never-ending entertainment. Millions and millions of Americans (especially males) are literally intoxicated with sports. Sports are no longer a great American pastime; they are now a great American obsession.

On this Veterans Day I was reflecting, as I often do, on my own military service.  It occurred to me that this year marks the 20th anniversary of when I enlisted in the Army.  It is hard to believe twenty years has gone by since I strolled into the recruiting office as a nineteen year old goofball who was working as a dishwasher at a small restaurant and asked the Army sergeant sitting behind the desk how I could become a paratrooper.  He thought it was a joke at first and asked his buddy working with him if he set me up to this.

Over 800 people were arrested this weekend past in a massive sweep of suspected pedophiles and the pimps who supply them.  Nearly 70 children were rescued, although in truth, it's hard to say how many of these damaged souls will ever recover the lives they might have had.

In our current series in the book of Revelation, we come to the second letter to the churches; the letter to the church in Smyrna. To reiterate, there are seven letters to seven churches, actual Christian assemblies that existed at the time of this writing in the Roman province of Asia Minor. As we have previously stated, there were more than seven churches at this time in Asia Minor. These seven however were chosen for some reason to represent the entirety of the Church Age. There exact order fits the pattern of seven distinct periods of Church history. Had they been in any other order they would not have fit the pattern. This book, as is all of the Bible, is truly amazing.

I could not think of a better way to spend a Saturday morning than to veg out on a good, entertaining sci-fi movie. I have loved doing that very thing for over 50 years so why stop now. I loved movies like Forbidden Planet with Robbie the Robot and The Day the Earth Stood Still. I had seen the trailers and it looked fast paced and exciting which it turned out to be but the reaction to the movie by the critics (it was panned) and the general public (it was #1 at the box office) as well by me turned out to be not what I was expecting.

Now, I've been a Christian for over 47 years, so you'd think that I would, at least, have a handle on what true worship is. The truth that the Lord showed me was, yes, I praised Him, yes, I read His Word and yes, I confessed and repented of my sins on a daily basis. But, after I did these things, I would get up and go about my business, without so much as a thought about truly worshiping Him.

Through the years as I have studied the book of Revelation, when I would come to the letters to the seven churches I readily saw of course the local application of them. In other words, I recognized them as literal congregations, many of them with very real problems. I also saw the ecclesiastical or homiletic value in that they contained practical help and counsel for all Christians and all churches of all times.
